Note: Catalogue number: REH 462. Cover blurb: The BBC Radiophonic Workshop’s long (and continuing) association with the Doctor Who series began with the Signature Tune [sic] for the very first programme. Ron Grainer provided the composition notes and the Workshop did the rest. During the past twenty years, the Workshop has provided all the special sounds and latterly the incidental music for the past three series. Most famous sounds are, of course, the Tardis materialisation and dematerialisation sounds (not an elephant in labour, but the strings of an old piano recorded and treated) and the treatment of speech which produced the Dalek voices. Brian Hodgson was creator of the sounds for the first nine years, since which time Dick Mills has continued the tradition still making full use of the Workshop’s synthesizers and acoustically recorded real sounds. The incidental music is composed by Malcolm Clarke, Peter Howell and Roger Limb on a shared basis over the series, which accounts for the varying styles of composition but which are nevertheless just what the Doctor ordered. SIDE 1 1. TARDIS — DOCTOR WHO The Tardis arrives, with the Signature Tune from the original series, up to August 1980.
2. THE SEA DEVILS England’s sea defences are threatened by the Sea Devils, led by the Doctor’s arch-enemy the Master. The incidental music (the first full electronic score by the Workshop for Dr. Who in 1971) reflects the menace of their underwater world. 3. MEGLOS The Doctor is stalked by Meglos, a power-crazed cactoid. 4. NYSSA’S THEME 5. KASSIA’S WEDDING MUSIC 6. THE THREAT OF MELKUR The Doctor’s travels are not always terrifying and hazardous. Nyssa’s Theme and Kassia’s Wedding Music provide welcome respite from the Threat of Melkur who is preoccupied with taking over the Throne of Traken, by controlling the Source Manipulator. 7. EXPLORING THE LAB Across the void of space comes a spaceliner carrying the evil Monarch and his assistants Enlightenment and Persuasion. The scene is the deserted laboratory with its ever-spying Manopticon; the Doctor, Tegan, Nyssa and Adric investigate. 8. NYSSA IS HYPNOTIZED When Nyssa becomes suspicious of Monarch’s plans, she is hypnotized by Enlightenment. 9. THE LEISURE HIVE The Tardis transports us to Argolis, a planet with a violent radioactive atmosphere. Within the Hive, Pangol is cloning regiments of warriors by means of the Tachyon Re-Creation Generator. The music accompanies the warriors as they emerge from the Generator intent on taking over the planet — and beyond. SIDE 2 1. OMEGA FIELD FORCE [sic] Through the opening observation screen of the flying Tardis, a strange shape is seen approaching from that part of space and time known as the Arc of Infinity. A force field created by Omega takes over the Tardis.
2. ERGON THREAT Meanwhile, in an underground cellar somewhere in Amsterdam, the Ergon (under orders from Omega) overcomes Tegan and Colin with an energy laser. 3. TERMINATION OF THE DOCTOR Subsequently on Gallifrey, the Matrix has also fallen under Omega’s control; Nyssa pleads for the Doctor’s life but he is ‘terminated’ and disappears into the Matrix itself. 4. BANQUETING MUSIC The Time Winds, which constantly blow on the reverse side of the Gateway Mirror, act as a background to ghostly banqueting music. 5. TSS MACHINE ATTACKED Adric is trapped helplessly in the TSS Machine as it is attacked by the Kinda led by Aris, who is under the control of the Mara. 6. JANISSARY BAND In this excerpt from the sequel to ‘Kinda’ the Janissary ceremonial band passes by. 7. SUBTERRANEAN CAVES The Life-Detecting Scanner on the Earth’s surface traces events in the subterranean caves where mysterious Androids glide to and fro; a rockfall adds to the terrors awaiting the Troopers in the darkness. 8. REQUIEM A Requiem for a Trooper mortally wounded by an Android’s laser. 9. MARCH OF THE CYBERMEN Space music leads into the vast cargo hold aboard an inter-galactic freighter. Within Cryogenic Capsules the Cybermen are awaiting the signal to emerge and march against the Doctor. 10. DOCTOR WHO The Signature Tune to the current series, from August 1980. |
