Note: The cover blurb’s claim — which also appeared in Pertwee’s obituary in The Times — that Pertwee was in “120 films” appears to be somewhat exaggerated: his IMDB profile lists 38 acting roles in movies (including 5 uncredited roles). 38 is still quite impressive — more movie roles than any of the other Doctors, except William Hartnell — but obviously a long way off 120! Presumably The Times counted his many TV and straight-to-video appearances in their total. Cover blurb: To millions of fans, Jon Pertwee was the Dr. Who, but he was also Worzel Gummidge, Commander High-Price and hundreds of other characters in a career that spanned sixty years. He joined a circus and was an actor in rep, before he served in naval intelligence during the war. He made his name on radio in comedy series such as Waterlogged Spa and The Navy Lark, which ran for 18 years. He starred in the West End and on Broadway and appeared in 120 films including several of the Carry On series. On television he played Dr. Who for five years and then enchanted a generation of children as Worzel Gummidge. Before his death in May 1996, at the age of 76, he had been touring Britain with his one-man show Who is Jon Pertwee? He was a brilliant raconteur and this recording provides a unique opportunity the share the audience’s obvious delight at the many hilarious stories and anecdotes about his life and career. It is a lasting tribute to a great character actor, and a great character — Jon Pertwee. Recorded at Haymarket Theatre, Basingstoke and Greenwich Theatre, London on 5th and 9th July 1995. |
